College was never easy and it sure as hell wasn't fun. At least not for me. I had a girlfriend and went to parties sometimes. God I got hangovers like you wouldn't believe, but I stopped that after my first year seeing as my grades were going down and would drop further if I hadn't stopped. Becoming a engineer is not easy, I struggled even after I gave up partying and alcohol. But somehow I pulled through.
When I had just graduated college, I moved in with my girlfriend. Not a lot happened around our city. Life was normal, but I'll get to the point now.
We went to the yard sales on some weekends. Seeing as I am a hardcore gamer, I was always on the lookout for old games. I found some pretty rare one. I even found an unwrapped copy of Star Craft 64 for 30$. But one Saturday morning, I was driving around the other neighborhoods in the city when I spotted a huge yard sale. There were lots of old Nintendo consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. I already had those; but there also appeared to be games.
I pulled over and looked for any games I didn't have. There were mostly generics, games like Super Mario Bros. But one stuck out like black on white. It was a Super Super Nintendo Entertainment System cartridge with a piece of tape labeled "Dream". The owner wanted 15$ for it, a bogus price for a dirty old cartridge, but my curiosity got the best of me.
I wasn't ready for what would happen next...
After I got home I immediately popped the game in. It didn't work at first but after a Q-Tip, it started up with the logo of a company I'd never heard of. "Super Games". I rolled with it. At first, It looked like a crappy re-skin of Super Mario World. Same music, but different sprites; Mario looked like a gargoyle. "Wow, what crap. I can't believe I bought this." Those were my thoughts. I played the first levels and they were the exact same, except for Mario. I took the cartridge out and threw at the wall in frustration.
The tape had peeled back and revealed the word "Nightmare" on the other side of the tape. I drove it back to the house where I bought it, but the house was broken down and had cobwebs on it. I knocked on the door but all I heard was the echo of the knocks. I sighed and got in my car. The roads were different, some were cracked and others were just tire tracks in dirt. I ran in my house and it started to rain outside.
I shut the door. The only thing I could think was "What the hell." I yelled my girlfriends name but nothing was said back, I went into our room and she had a noose around her neck with blood written on the wall "Wake up, Scott". And then every thing was black.
I woke up in my bed with my girlfriend next to me. I'm writing this the night after, and I swear just heard something whisper in my ear "wake up".
