The Foxie for Best Squick in a story for 2013 goes to...Edit
This story was almost a winner for the Most Memorable story, but the reason why I remember it puts it more firmly here. To quote myself, "I do present you with the dubious honour of being the first person to use vomiting in a story in such a way that it actually seemed situationally appropriate."
Now, this isn't a story for everyone. Trigger warnings and NSFW tags apply here. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I didn't even like it myself. However, the quality of writing is solid, and it does a good job of illustrating something that many writers (even myslef at times) can struggle with...making even "mundane" things unsettling, and even horrifying. If you can stomach the grittier content, this is definitely a story to learn from. Honestly, I don't even think it's a story you're supposed to like. It's an uncomfortable, sickening tale of the worst things humankind can do to themselves, and it does that job particularly well.
